Project Description

Students will research the food waste scenario in Richmond by contacting grocery stores and surveying them about their surplus/outdated food sharing and disposal policies.

Goals of the Project

We would like to find out what work is currently being done or has already been done in terms of perishable food recovery within Richmond. A look at Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Strategy and how it relates to food recovery.
Our main goal is to increase our perishable food offering to our clients. Perishable food that is fresh or packaged, uncooked and is close to its best before date. Some examples include: Milk, cheese, meat, produce, frozen ready to eat meals etc.

Students will be oriented through an in person meeting and a tour of the food bank on the afternoon of Monday, January 22, 2018

Expected Outcomes

Learning Outcomes

We hope students will learn about the issues around perishable food recovery and the amount of usable food that is being dumped into the landfills.
We think students will come to appreciate the role of Food Bank in addressing food insecurity within our community
Students will develop a better understanding of the obstacles surrounding perishable food recovery

Organizational Outcomes

A better understanding of the (uncooked) perishable food waste scenario in Richmond
At least one to three new prospective perishable food donors
An infographic that we can share with our donors and the general public about food wastage vs food usage
