Background
The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic in British Columbia, Canada (B.C) is one part of a global pandemic caused by the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) virus.1 Though the virus is genetically similar to the coronavirus that caused the 2003 SARS outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) decided on the name COVID-19 in order to avoid creating fear for some racialized populations, particularly in Asia, where the 2003 SARS outbreak was most prominent. 2

Phase 1: January 28 - May 18 2020
Phase 2: May 19 – June 23, 2020
