Coffee Flavouring Syrups & Sugar-Free Alternatives
This page provides a comparison of a vanilla flavouring syrup (Torani brand) commonly used to flavour coffee and an example of its sugar-free alternative (Cafe Plus brand). These are products similar to what is used to flavour the coffees you order at Starbucks or your cafe of choice. Most cafes now offer sugar-free substitutes for various flavouring syrups, and if you have ever wondered how sugar-alternatives match up to sucrose-based flavouring syrups, we provide some information below!

- Additives: Caramel colour, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, citric acid, cellulose gum, sodium bisulphate
- Explain the roles of fat substitutes, sugar substitutes, and/or additives used in terms of the functional properties they contribute to the product
- Sugar Substitutes[1]:
- Acesulfame potassium: provides a synergistic sweetening effect when combined with other sweeteners (e.g., Sucralose), contributing 0 Cal/g. while being 200 times sweeter than sucrose.
- Sucralose: a chlorinated molecule that serves as a sweetener approximately 600 times sweeter than sucrose while also contributing 0 Cal/g.
- Combined, these sugar substitutes make the product sweet while contributing 0 Cal/g. with no effect on carbohydrate metabolism.
- Additives:
- Sugar Substitutes[1]:
- Compare and contrast the lists of the two products and explain differences
- When comparing the two products, their ingredient lists are very similar to each other. However, one crucial difference is in the sweetener used. Instead of cane sugar, the sugar free product uses sucralose and acesulfame potassium. Since these two sweeteners are several hundred times sweeter than the cane sugar, they appear much lower on the ingredients list of the sugar free product. Because much less sweetener is needed to achieve similar sweetness and both contribute 0 Cal/g, the sugar free product is calorie and carbohydrate free.
