Purdy's Hedgehogs
Purdys Mini Hedgehogs are a widely-loved treat providing a delectable chocolate-hazelnut taste experience. This classic has also sparked the creation of a 'no sugar added' Mini Hedgehogs product by the Purdys brand. This page will investigate these two products side by side, uncovering the truth behind what makes these sweet treats what they are, as well as how they differ.

Ingredient List Comparison
The ingredients listed in both products are mostly similar with a few variations. The no sugar hedgehogs contains more ingredients than the regular hedgehogs and these differences are maltitol (wheat) and vanilla flavour. The differences shown in the two products are the result of the no sugar added hedgehogs needing to be sweetened in order to taste like the original which contains sugar. Maltitol is a sugar substitute and vanilla flavour is used to further sweeten the product.
Sugar Substitute Identification
As mentioned above, the sugar substitutes used in the "no sugar added" version of Purdy's Hedgehogs are (1) Maltitol and (2) Vanilla Flavour. Maltitol is a sugar alcohol that is commonly used as a sugar substitute in low-carb or sugar-free products; it is a carbohydrate with similar properties to sugar (sucrose) itself, however it serves as an artificial (sugar free) sweetener. Maltitol is almost as sweet as sugar, as it is estimated to have around 75-90% of the sweetness of sucrose; it is also lower in calories and has a lower glycemic index compared to sugar itself. Maltitol, in combination with vanilla flavour, is used to mimic a similar degree of sweetness from the sugar used in regular Purdy's Hedgehogs, without containing sugar (sucrose) itself.
