General
This course topic covers the different types of metadata as structured within the course. The type communicates what information can be provided from that kind of metadata.
Subtopics
Administrative
This type of metadata is integral to the management of the resource and does not contain informational content.
Preservation
This type of metadata includes information about the resource's provenance, authenticity, object structure, and object context/environment.
Technical
This type of metadata conveys system/hardware/software requirements for accessing, using, processing, etc. digital resources. It may also include technical properties like the file name, type, size, etc.
Descriptive
This type of metadata includes information about the informational and intellectual content of the resource and is necessary for the identification and discovery of resources. This information is about the resource, so any unique identifiers (like a book's ISBN) or a video file's runtime would be included here.
Use
This type of metadata conveys the uses of the resource. For example, a use metadata statement could be: this YouTube video is used to learn how to jumpstart a vehicle's battery.
