The Chemistry Building is a building at the University of British Columbia's Point-Grey campus. It is home to the UBC Department of Chemistry[2]. It is divided into four blocks: the B Block South Wing, the C Block East Wing, the D Block Centre Wing, and the E Block North Wing[1]. The A Block is considered separate and is known as the Chemistry Physics Building[1][3].
History
Construction of the Chemistry Building (then known as the Science Building) began with the centre wing (D Block) in 1914[1][4][5]. However, it was left unfinished due to the outbreak of the First World War[1][4]. After the war, the building became a focal point of the Great Trek when more than a thousand students flocked to the unfinished structure to call for the establishment of the UBC Point-Grey campus[4][5]. The building was eventually completed in 1925, and was renamed as the Chemistry Building in 1949[4]. Additional blocks were added in the following decades, starting with the B Block in 1959, the E Block in 1962, and the C Block in 1963[4]. The A Block, which is known separately as the Chemistry Physics Building, was added in 1989[3][4].
The original D Block went through upgrades during the 2008 UBC Renew project[4].
Classrooms
The Chemistry Building houses six classrooms[6]:
Classroom | Capacity |
---|---|
CHEM B150 | 265 |
CHEM B250 | 240 |
CHEM C124 | 80 |
CHEM C126 | 80 |
CHEM D200 | 114 |
CHEM D300 | 114 |
In addition to classrooms, the main office of the UBC Department of Chemistry is located in CHEM D223[2]. The Chemistry Building also houses multiple laboratories and research facilities[7].
