The Experience that turned every concept I had of teaching upside down.

The Experience I lived all these past few years teaching Asia was never meant to do such long term changes or create deep rooted psychological problems for me. As I go forward in life, and try to improve on my sort and lot in everything, I find myself going back to the basics of why would I have to retrain myself to function normally in my own adoptive society. While training and retraining for success in this part of the world, I came to realize that my previous experiences teaching abroad were acting as a hindrance to my improvements, instead of doing otherwise. I say hindrance here because of the simple fact that I have discovered that both Asian- Taiwanese to be specific- and Canadian- British Columbia- educational systems are so different on so many levels, personal, professional, and academic. These differences simply made it harder for me to overlook such changes and, instead of trying to adapt to and adopt new ways of growth, I ended up making mistake after mistake, subconsciously, at least, in dealing with the new culture I am living in currently. One must never ignore the facts laid out in front of them, whether they be stated, or implied. The fact that the Taiwanese educational system is "teacher" based should have been clue enough for anyone to realize and recognize that transitioning between it and that of the Canadian- British Columbian- educational system, which is "student" centric, would cause immense trouble for anyone going back and forth between one and the other. These "not-so-subtle" differences can either make or break a learning experience; that is something I have been personally experiencing for over four months now. As an adult and lifelong learner, I am discovering that these huge gaps in thinking, reasoning, educating, and delivering methods can and do affect everything I undergo, not only academically, but also on a professional and personal level. How to survive such differences is something I am personally keen on discovering and or uncovering for future students and educators who wish to go through the same transitional journey such as mine. In this research, I will peel every single layer of difference and or hindrance effecting my own growth in order to help those who follow my path in the future. to be continued...
