About Me

My name is Aiyana Twigg. I am Ktunaxa on my mother's side, and Blackfoot on my father's side. I am from Tobacco plains, the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Ktunaxa people. I am an Undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Arts program at UBC. I am pursuing a double major in First Nations Endangered Languages (FNEL) and Anthropological linguistics. With training in FNEL and anthropological linguistics, I hope to acquire knowledge in linguistic analysis, and documentation, and decolonize and deconstruct the westernized concepts that are embedded in linguistics that negatively impact First Nations languages and their connection with culture. I hope to approach First Nations languages in a decolonized and holistic way that respects the intrinsic connection between language and culture, while also fostering a relationship with linguistic analysis and documentation.

I am currently working as the Arts Indigenous Student peer advisor, and one of the main facilitators for the Indigenous Leadership Collective (ILC) at UBC-V. In the past, I worked with the Aboriginal centre at UBC-O as a host and co-facilitator for the Indigenous Living Learning Community (ILLC).
