Group work
Sean,
Reading the second bit of the homework question, i think i spotted something wrong in our conclusion this morning. So, it's this bit here
Change the y-intercept to any number between 0 and K
So, with what we have arrived to,
- , the y intercept is y = 0.7, which is not between 0 and k (k here being 0.5), it's outside the upper boundary of k.
So i played with a few options. And it looks if we make k a number bigger than what we swap e for (the base for -t), we get a y-intercept whose value falls between 0 and k. So, i guess what i mean to say is that, since whatever we substitute e for has to be bigger than 0 and smaller than k (the bit added to the base to the power (-T), instead of what we had arrived at (right now we have k = 0.5, while we used 50 to replace e), we twist the hierarchy around, making k bigger than the 50 bit. The graph's shape and trend of it remains pretty mcuh teh same just a little flatter (more stretched out).
The group could possibly discuss this further via email, but i dont' have anyone's which is fine. I hope you see this by tomorrow so we can do something or nothing about that at the end of the workshop.
Regards,
Bella
Hi Bella,
I think that K is actually the value of the horizontal asymptote so our y intercept would be within the guidelines then. Also I was playing with the function we made up and if you put a larger value on the top of the equation instead of the 1 we have on ours you get a much larger value for the horizontal asymptote and thus a larger value for the population for our bacteria. Just a thought as to whether we want to include that in our function to make it seem more realistic.

Sean,
I'm worried about our group homework. It isn't looking pretty (you know what I mean). But I'm going to worry about my own bit right now. You said 'so now our equation is 1/ 0.1+e^(t- something), the answer to which is 1 point something. so after half a year only 1 and a little worms are still alive ? Do we need to tweak the numbers bit more. Also, didn't we say we'll change the e value to something else apart from the k value.
Bella
Sean,
I need to email everyone. Me and Audrey came up with a few ideas and we want to see what you guys would find interesting. I'm sorry, you gave me your email on Monday but I think I've lost it/ my cat has eaten it. Or I have accidentally eaten it. Please reply straight away as we need to get David's opinion if it's a topic outside the range of the suggested, then we find a way to divide the work, etc. which would be tough. Any ideas?
Bella
Hi Bella,
My email is s_nugent@hotmail.com, sorry about not making it to class today I just couldn't pull myself out of bed haha
