Practical Suggestions

Hi there!

I really like how you’ve organized your wiki into different sections. I think it is really helpful to organize your work in this way as it makes it clear to read and follow. I’m going to outline some practical suggestions for each category.

Teenage Pregnancy Statistics: I think it is really effective how you used statistics as I think using numbers helps to put things into perspective. I think that your use of statistics could be supplemented by some diagrams or graphs to make it more clear. Sometimes when people read a lot of numbers and statistics it is difficult to synthesize it all. I do think that you did a good job of summarizing and pointing out key figures , which really did help to grasp the message and the concepts that you were trying to get across. I am wondering what the statistics in America are like in comparison to the rest of the world. I think it would be really interesting to explore that idea more.

Teenage Pregnancy Causes: The causes that you outline are really comprehensive and they do a good job of reflecting a wide-range of possible direct and indirect motivations associated with teen pregnancy. With regards to your section on ‘Media,’ I am wondering if TV shows like ‘Teen Mom’ can also be a positive influence on decision making.

Teenage Pregnancy and Education I think that it would be helpful to split this section into a few different paragraphs or categories. You do give a very strong stance on the necessity to promote education for teen parents. Perhaps you could suggest some ways that teen parents could be encouraged to pursue education. Maybe something like developing special programs to facilitate completion of their education.

In general, I think you could also make your wiki more visually appealing by adding some images, but overall I think you did a really great job and I learned a lot from reading your assignment!

Hi,

I really enjoyed your wiki page. I thought it was quite informative and very useful for those who want to learn more about the different explanations of teen pregnancy. I especially thought that you did a great job with your research; the causes section was very well done in my point of view. With teen pregnancy, many people rule out the rape aspect and are quick to judge teenagers. The reasons: “she was not careful” or “she was being stupid” are usually the things people conclude to regarding teenage pregnancy. No one knows the story behind a pregnancy, if it was planned or a surprise, if the 17 year old girl is married and wants to have a family, or if she was raped. This was a very important part of teen pregnancy to point out which you did in your wiki. Now one quick suggestion: I have to agree with Alyssa. As I was reading through the media causes, you stated that shows such as Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant can have negative effects on teenagers. Being someone who has watched these shows in the past I actually believe the opposite. Throughout the show there are advertisements of websites such as “itsyoursexlife.org.” These websites educate teenagers on contraceptives and how to take control of their own sex lives. Also, Teen Mom chooses a select few of mothers from 16 and pregnant and follows them through life after having their baby. The show depicts the realities of life as a teen mom, which actually has a positive effect on teenagers watching these shows as the viewers see the trials the teen mothers have endured. But I really enjoyed reading through your page so well done.
