Indigeneity and Neocolonialism

Hi there, I think that this is a really important topic and very relevant to the subject matter of this course. One really important issue that you might consider adding to the page is a section on the relationship between neocolonialism and Indigenous people(s). The relationship between capitalist economic exploitation and the continuing oppression and discrimination against Indigenous people(s) exists to varying degrees in a great number of environments in today's world. In the Canadian context, issues like cultural appropriation deal with this concept as forms of Indigenous culture are utilized for economic gain that does not benefit that Indigenous group. This is exceptionally problematic as what might be seen as a way to engage with Indigenous culture is actually harmful. To a much more extreme degree, neocolonialism related to development has tragically affected many Indigenous people and groups. In Guatemala, mining companies from Canada have intruded on Indigenous lands, bringing violence and economic exploitation. This website from Amnesty International might provide some important references that could improve your page http://www.amnesty.ca/category/issue/business-and-human-rights/mining-and-indigenous-rights-in-guatemala You also might consider a documentary called "Defensora" which chronicles the Indigenous resistance against intrusive mining practices. http://www.defensorathefilm.com

Good luck with your page!
