Course Development Initial Meeting
This meeting is a very important preliminary phase for the project which covers the initial contact between the course author or the department head and a member from the course development team. Normally the project manager/instructional designer is the contact person that will guide the course author/instructor through this phase (this might be different depending on the nature of the project/proposal). The same project manager/instructional designer most probably guide the course author/instructor throughout the remainder of the development cycle, or the project may be passed over to another project manager/instructional designer after this phase.

Online Learning: Course Development Cycle
The organizational model for online course development presented here is a project team based structure consisting of instructional designers/project managers, web programmers/designers, librarian, graphic artists and multi-media producers. During online course development, the team is joined by a Faculty appointed subject matter expert referred to as the ‘Course Author’. The role of the Instructional Designer (ID) is diverse and multi-faceted ranging from project team facilitation, to budgeting and scheduling, to understanding teaching epistemologies and to the selection of learning technologies. Within this context the ID works with the course author in all the course development phases to set learning outcomes, select appropriate technologies that enable learning, implement interactive activities such as discussion forums, chats and blogs and develops course evaluation processes. The course development cycle consists of Planning, Development, Production, Implementation, and Evaluation.
