According to this graph, the Americans overwhelmed the British in terms of prominence in around 1880 when the word American seemed to be more popular of a word than British. This of course is solely based on word use.

Wildcard search

Unsurprisingly, the University of Oxford was historically the most popular university. However, as time passed, the number of universities increased, fragmenting the share of the top 5. Surprisingly, over the years, the prominence and significance of the top 5 was rarely overtaken.

Inflection search

Seeing red has been consistently the most popular inflection. However "seeing Red" seemed to be always the second most popular. I suspect it's because some people think colour needs to be capitalized which is untrue

The verb "to fly" is more popular than the noun "a fly". However it's surprising that the verb to fly has been consistently more popular even though the planes were not invented until the 20th century
