Module II Editing 101

From UBC Wiki

About

  • Module II introduces the fundamentals of structural editing, focusing on what it is, the structural editor’s core responsibilities, and the importance of effective communication and strong author–editor relationships.
  • Learners should be able to explain the structural editor’s role in assessment, organization, and content, identify common structural weaknesses and errors, and describe how to establish productive, professional relationships with authors. The module also emphasizes understanding and crafting effective query letters as a key communication tool.
  • Activities include required readings, a hands-on structural editing exercise with self-assessment, participation in the Module 2 discussion, and completion of Assignment 1, which students are encouraged to review early due to firm deadlines.
  • Learners are prompted to reflect on the structural editor’s responsibilities and the central role that positive, collaborative author–editor relationships play at every stage of the editing process.
