Top pick: CITIZENShift

CITIZENShift

CITIZENShift is a multimedia platform dedicated to media for social change. Our ever-growing network engages people from all backgrounds to explore and debate contemporary issues, to contribute their own material – and to use media to make a difference.

On CitizenShift you can explore today’s crucial issues through film, photography, articles, blogs and podcasts. This social media network is a space to share media, voice opinions and explore unique content from active citizens, independent filmmakers and media artists.

Today’s media landscape is rapidly changing. With camcorders, cell phones, digital cameras, and laptops in the hands of ordinary citizens, people are now telling their own stories. What we know as the "mainstream media" is actively being challenged by a citizen media revolution: stories told from multiple perspectives by those who are directly affected.

National Film Board of Canada

Cultural Diversity Collection:

Our productions take stands on issues of global importance: the environment, human rights, international conflict, health care, and more. They give a voice to the underrepresented. They celebrate diversity and build bridges between cultures, while advancing the role of women in cinema.

They make a positive difference in people’s lives.

The NFB is a leader in developing and distributing timely, quality educational media. We’re an important partner in the development of minority language communities across Canada. We work with persons with disabilities to give them the skills they need to tell their own stories. And we’re a world leader in creating award-winning media for and by Aboriginal peoples.

Teach Peace

To reach peace, we teach peace. We invest our energy because we want to safeguard life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To help end and prevent future wars, we work to transform from a world based on greed, pain and cruelty to a world based on generosity, compassion and love. Our members hunger for a world with meaning, authenticity, and freedom of opportunity.

TED: Ideas Worth Spreading

On TED.com, we make the best talks and performances from TED and partners available to the world, for free. More than 500 TEDTalks are now available, with more added each week. All of the talks feature closed captions in English, and many feature subtitles in various languages. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.

The Danger of a Single Story

Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.
