Masculinity and the Gay Community

From UBC Wiki

It may seem nuanced to some, but the conceptualization of a Gay relationship consists of a partnership between a man and a man. With this definition of a relationship, comes with expectation of gender

Introduction

“Are you a top or bottom, masculine or femme, straight-acting or queer” – these jargon that the gay community has employed to label an individual was eye-opening for me as a first-time Grindr user. In the day-to-day interaction between close friends, these labels continue to be a specter when we chat about my sexuality – there is always a looming pressure to identify with a gay label. Although I’ve always refused to label myself sexually, I’ve never questioned my sexual attraction towards ‘masculine’ man and the premise of masculinity in the first place. Many people often assume that oppressions on gay individuals are only enacted by the heterosexual society around them, but not caused by members within the community. This flawed argument assumes that gay community exists within a social vacuum– where its members do not interact nor communicate with the ideals of heteronormative society.
