Background

The Library’s Reference & Instruction Committee was struck in 2004 with a mandate to provide leadership and vision for the library’s reference and instruction services by monitoring research and best practices, initiating discussion and collaboration within and outside the library, and furthering the work of integrating information literacy into the curriculum. RIC has successfully accomplished a great deal since that time. In Summer 2009, various committee members suggested RIC review its terms of reference. In October 2009, the committee met to do this and discussed various issues including membership, representation, reporting structure, and decision making. The outcome of this discussion was to draft a new terms of reference for a UBC Library Teaching & Learning Advisory Committee based on the discussion for review and endorsement by RIC and PSC. This new committee will also be one of various mechanisms for ensuring that the goals and actions in the UBC Library Strategic Plan are achieved.


Purpose

The primary purpose of this committee’s work will be to integrate the library as a key partner in teaching critical thinking, digital literacy, and information fluency through collaboration with faculty, departments, the UBC Faculty Senate and other university bodies whose mandate includes oversight for curriculum and related issues.


Roles & Responsibilities

  • Provide overall direction for the Library’s instructional programs, both within the Library, and in relation to the instructional programs of key partners on campus.
  • Identify and advance opportunities for collaboration related to the development, delivery, and promotion of the Library’s instructional programs.
  • Liaise with relevant committees, campus units and university bodies regarding how best to integrate library instruction into the curriculum.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the Library’s instructional programs and their alignment to the academic curriculum and teaching and learning objectives.
  • Report the Library’s instructional activities to the broader campus community on a regular basis.
  • Advocate for support [staffing, financial, technological, etc.] to enhance instructional programs as required.
  • Establish working groups as needed to address specific teaching and learning issues and to oversee associated projects.
  • Facilitate quarterly Teaching and Learning Forums for UBC Library staff to share best practices and challenges, discuss new approaches and initiatives, and engage in teaching and learning issues.


Membership

The Teaching & Learning Advisory Committee’s membership aims to represent as many branch libraries as possible. It also strives to have only one representative per branch at any given time.

  • Teaching & Learning Librarian – ex officio [Chair]
  • Associate University Librarian, Public Services – ex officio
  • Learning Services Librarian, Chapman Learning Commons – ex officio
  • 1 representative from Library Systems & Information Technology - ex officio
  • 2 branch/division heads, representing the Public Services Committee
  • 2 liaison librarians representing UBCV Science Portfolio
  • 2 liaison librarians representing UBCV Arts Portfolio
  • 1 liaison librarian representing UBCO
  • 2 library assistants

The term of appointment for all committee members will be 2 years.

At least once a year representatives from the following campus units, and others as needed, will be invited to participate in committee meetings to share information and practices and discussion areas of mutual interest:

  • Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology
  • Faculty of Graduate Studies, Professional Development Program
  • Arts Instructional Support and Information Technology (ARTS ISIT)
  • The Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative
  • Centre for Instructional Support in Applied Science
  • Skylight, Faculty of Science
  • Land and Food Systems Learning Centre


Meetings

  • Committee meetings will be held monthly.
  • Committee facilitated Teaching & Learning Forums will be held quarterly. Input will be solicited regarding forum topics.
  • Meeting agendas will be sent to lib-all 1 week before meetings for feedback/additions. Minutes will be distributed to lib-all within 2 weeks of all meetings.


Reporting

This Committee reports to the Director, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.

Liaison with Other Library and Campus Committees

Designated members of the Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee will be responsible for liaising with the following committees and reporting back to TLAC regarding relevant opportunities and issues.

  • Public Services Committee, Library – AUL, Public Services, TLAC Branch/Division Heads
  • Assessment Working Group, Library – Teaching & Learning Librarian
  • Chapman Learning Commons Program Advisory Committee – Learning Services Librarian
  • Teaching and Learning with Technology Committee, CTLT – Teaching & Learning Librarian
  • Senate Committee on Teaching & Learning – Librarian Representative to Senate

The Teaching & Learning Advisory Committee will review its Terms of Reference annually, making changes as needed.
