Checklist for Wimba Instruction Support in Woodward Room 344

Class is Scheduled. Meet with instructor at least 1 day before the class.


  1. Confirm room booked. Confirm the instructor has booked the room: http://www.library.ubc.ca/booking
  2. Confirm you have access to the classroom (ubc.wimba.com)
    • Verify with the instructor that you have presenter access to the classroom. [Instructor logs in > clicks in room > Access> User Access> add user id> (your id)> save changes]
    • Get the URL for the class
  3. Discuss instructor requirements. Explain options to instructor.
    Discuss how instructor would like to be supported.
    Verify with the instructor if they would like you to:
    • Start arching the class for them
    • Take an attendance list
    • Pass them questions or comments
    • Other


Day of Class: Begin setup approximately 30-45 minutes before class time.

  1. Bring laptop for “student view”
  2. Run Set Up Wizard http://67.202.226.156/wizard/wizard.html on instruction support workstation. Check with your instructor as they may want you to run the wizard on their instructor computer too.
    • Confirm that audio and sound are working well
  3. Confirm you have access to the classroom (ubc.wimba.com)
    • Verify with the instructor that you have presenter access to the classroom.

    • Get the URL for the class
  1. Open online classroom 15 minutes prior to class time
    • if it’s not already open, open the class
  2. Greet students as they arrive
    Examples:
    • “Welcome to this Online Library workshop for Biology 140 students. The class will be starting in X minutes.”
    • “Can everyone hear me? Please use the checkmark to indicate if you can hear me. Thanks!”
    • “Please try chatting in the bottom lefthand box, or test your microphone. Thanks”
      If no response, try sending a chat message to the student: Example: “Hi Jane, before we get started, we’re testing audio and chat. Can you hear me?”
    • “We will be recording this class. To protect your privacy, we encourage you to log on with an alias or nickname.”


NOTES Online Culture

  • Texting, chatting, etc. can often be more casual, yet professional.
  • We may use emoticons to also create an environment which encourages questions and discovery.
  • Timely response to inquiry is important and acknowledges to student that help is available. Use of … , or phrase one moment please… to let the patron know we’re still looking for information or that we’ll be right back.
