Advanced Searching for Journal Articles: Introduction


In Module 3B, you learned the basics about how to find articles using Summon using the fundamental search strategies: keywords, Boolean operators, phrase searching, and truncation.

In this module you will build on this knowledge and learn additional advanced search techniques to improve the completeness of your searches and relevance of your results. The techniques that will be covered can be broken down into the following steps:

  • Selecting article indexes based on subject area, date coverage, publication type, etc.
  • Strategies to further improve the completeness of your searches - Discipline specific articles indexes, Proximity searching
  • Strategies to further improve the relevancy of your results: Field searching, Use of subject headings
