Library:LTK Manual Widgets

From UBC Wiki

What is a widget?

A widget is the container for smaller pieces of content that make up an entire guide. Widgets are defined by functionality and content. The LTK contains five separate widgets. Choose your widget based on the type of information you want to display. The five widgets available within the LTK are: Embed, RSS, Resource Links, Text and Image, and UBC Wiki.

Create a Widget

Generally, you will work with widgets within the context of creating your pages, but you can also choose to build widgets independently to be embedded into a blog or website. For information on creating widgets from inside a page, visit the Pages section of the LTK Manual.

Create an Embed Widget

Use an Embed widget when you want to include embeddable java script. For example a You Tube or Vimeo video, a meebo chat box, a delicious tag cloud, etc.

To create an embed widget:

  1. Click the Widgets Tab in the LTK.
  2. Mouse over Create Widget and select Embed from the drop down menu.
  3. Click in the box Internal Name and give the widget a meaningful name.
  4. If you would like your widget to display a title, click in the Display Title box and enter a title.
  5. Click in the box Embed Code and go to the original website and cut & paste the embed code. In You Tube you can copy the code from the "Embed" box — you can find it in the "About This Video" box when you're watching the video. See this short video for a quick demo [1].
  6. You can add the Credit information in the text field, e.g., original Creator, source link, etc.
  7. You can add details about the video in the Description box.
  8. In the Tags box enter a keyword(s) to help you locate the widget within the LTK.
  9. Click on Save Widget at the bottom right hand side of the screen.

  2. Mouse over Create Widget and select RSS from the drop down menu.
  3. Click in the box under Internal Name and give the widget a meaningful name.
  4. If you would like your widget to display a title, click in the Display Title box and enter a title.
  5. If you are interested in a New Books @ UBC Library feed, click on click here! and fill out the form to generate an RSS feed.
  6. Click on the box under Feed URL and enter the RSS feed URL.
  7. Customize the display options to your preference.
  8. In the Tags box enter a keyword(s) to help you locate the widget within the LTK.
  9. Click on Save Widget at the bottom right hand side of the screen.

Create a Resource Links Widget

Use a Resource Links Widget when you want to include a list of resource links. For example, a list of databases.

To create a Resource Links Widget:

  1. Click the Widgets Tab in the LTK.
  2. Mouse over Create Widget and select Resource Links from the drop down menu.
  3. Click in the box under Internal Name and give the widget a meaningful name.
  4. If you would like your widget to display a title, click in the Display Title box and enter a title.
  5. Click on the box under Link URL and enter the URL. i.e. to a website, or to the database Information Page.
  6. Click in the box Link Title. This will cause the Get Resource Title and Description button to appear.
    1. To import the title and database description from a webpage, click the Get Resource Title and Description and the information will automatically populate the next two boxes. Please not, for database information pages, if there is no "short description" filled in on the information page, no description will be imported. The SGIT recommends filling in the short description in ColdFusion for future use.
    2. Alternatively you can manually enter the title and description.
  7. If you want to add another resource link, click on the blue Add Link button and repeat the previous steps.
  8. Please Note: Only check the Use EZProxy? box, when linking directly to articles or ebooks. Do not click on this box if you are linking to an Information Page or an ebook record in the catalogue, as these will prompt the user to authenticate.

  8. The uploaded image can be edited by clicking on the up arrow at the bottom, right hand side of the image. The image editor allows you to crop, resize, flip and rotate.
  9. To add the image to the widget, click on the image.
  10. Having added the image to the content box, you can now add descriptive text and/or an attribution. Standard image citations can include: Artist's Name (First and Last), Title and Date, Museum Name and Location.
