Library:LTK Manual Pages

From UBC Wiki

What is a Page?

A page is the frame that contains and organizes the content of your research guide. You create and name a page for your particular subject, such as Biology or English. Within a page, you will organize the various categories of information through tabs. For example, if you want to include a section on article databases in your page, you will generate an articles tab. Widgets contain the details of the content which populates your page. For example, you list the individual article databases in a widget. When you are ready, you can drop the widget into the relevant tab on your page. You can add content to your page using the following six widgets: Embed, RSS, Resource Links, Text and Image, UBC Wiki.

Create a new Guide

At this point in time the LTK is only being used to create Subject Guides and Topic Guides. Course guides will be added to the LTK at a later date.

To create a Guide:

  1. Click on the Guides tab.
  2. Click on the Create Page button on the left hand side of the screen.
  3. Specify an "internal" name for your guide. By default it will be named "Page-N" (N is a random number).
  4. Enter a "Guide Display Title".
  5. Under Page Properties enter the following:
    1. Subjects: first select a primary subject from the drop down menu, then select a secondary heading (If you do not see an appropriate secondary subject heading in the list, send a request to Paul Joseph to have it added). Once you've selected both a primary and secondary subject click the green plus icon to add them to the guide. You can then add another set of primary and secondary subjects. You can also delete the subjects by clicking on the red minus icon.
    2. Branches: select the Library branch you would like the guide to reside under (please note: this is not a mandatory field). If your subject also has an Okanagan Librarian designated to it, please add "Okanagan" as a Branch.
    3. Tags: enter keywords (separated by commas) to help users locate your guide. The search box on the portal page will search page titles and page tags.
    4. Other Options: check this box if you would like links to the Instruction Calendar, How to Cite, and Course Reserves on the home tab of your guide.
  6. Add a widget to the page by dragging the red Add Widget to the page editing space (your page will not save if there is no content in the "Home" tab).
  7. Click on the Save Page button at the top right hand of your screen.

Once you have saved your guide, additional page properties will appear on the page. These include:

  1. Ownership: use this feature to share ownership of your page (especially useful for adding UBCO colleagues) and identify a contact for the page. Only Owners can be selected as Contacts.
  2. Optional Alias: All LTK guides have a url that starts with: guides.library.ubc.ca/. Once the guide has been published you can create an alias, simply add the term you would like to replace the # with.

TIP: Click Save whenever you make a change or addition (adding a widget) to the page. If you hit the backspace key or Back button, you will lose your work if you have not saved it.

N.B. There is a known issue regarding Firefox versions below 4 where you may see a message about "Javascript stack space has been exhausted". This is not an error in LTK. It is recommended that if your guide is "large" (i.e. if it has many widgets -- exact number not known) that you edit it using Internet Explorer or Chrome (if available). If you see this message and if the browser is still responsive, do not save the guide, as the operation will likely fail and you will lose your work. Instead, open another browser and copy the content of any widgets you have edited or added over to the other browser.

"Lost" widgets: It is rare to lose actual widget information, but it is possible in some cases that a page may lose its record of what widgets it contains. Before re-creating widgets, check to see if they still exist (Add widget, then "Use Existing Widget").

Tabs: Add, Name, Move or Delete

When you are in Page Editor:

To create a new widget the first step is to select the type of widget you would like to create: Embed, RSS, Resource Links, Text and Image, or UBC Wiki.

The SGIT recommends filling in the short description in ColdFusion for future use.
