Alexander Street Press Databases

Playlists are themed collections of materials and can be created by any user of the database. Users can create playlists containing whole works, segments, and/or other items such as links to any URL. Playlists can be annotated, edited, copied, shared, and all playlists contain their own unique static URL. Playlists can be used as lists of personal favorites, class viewing/listening assignments, or as a teaching resource for in-class use.

Types of Playlists

1. All Playlists

Lists all playlists created by Alexander Street Press users worldwide.

2. My Playlists

Lists the playlists you have created. Requires registration to create a personal account.

3. Playlists Shared With Me

Lists playlists that other Alexander Street Press users have shared with you.

4. My Institution’s Playlists

List playlists created by UBC users. This is where course playlists should be created.

Creating an Account

To create an account, click on Sign In (under the search box), then click on register (blue link above the sign in boxes). Fill out the registration form (the profile page is optional). You will receive an e-mail confirmation from Alexander Street Press. Your sign in will work in any of the library’s Alexander Street Press databases (for example, if you created the account in Classical Music Library, the same sign in will work in Opera in Video).

You may also create playlists without account registration; the playlist will only appear under My Institution’s Playlists with the username Guest.

Creating Playlists

To create a playlist, click on Playlists on the navigation bar, then click on Create a Playlist.

You will be prompted to create a playlist title, insert any annotations you would like, and indicate who should see this playlist. Your options are:

  • Just me: This keeps your playlist private. Only you will be able to see this playlist when you are signed in to the database.
  • Everyone at my institution: This shares your playlist with anyone using the database within your college's, university's, or public library's IP range. This is a good option if you'd like to share a playlist with a class or department.
  • Everyone: This option makes your playlist public. Every user of the database will see your playlist. Alexander Street Press encourages students and scholars to share annotated playlists with other users to add context to the collection.

Remember, if you choose to share your playlist, others can only view your playlist. Only you will be able to edit it.

To add tracks to your playlist, simply search for the track you would like to add, and click on the + sign next to the track name, and specify which playlist it should be added to.
