At the Crossroads / by Rachel Isadora.

Summary

In this picture book, the South African children are excited that their fathers will soon return home after being away for months. The men have been working in the mines many miles away, and the children go to the crossroads to wait for them. The fathers finally arrive there at dawn, where they are reunited with their children. The illustrations, which are created with watercolour paints, effectively depict the moods of different parts of the day – the cheery morning, the calm night, and the invigorating dawn. Overall, the pictures are aesthetically pleasing, but some pictures are quite odd. For example, the boy shown bathing near the beginning of the story has an abnormally large head that seems to be the width of his shoulders.
