Learning Commons:Content Showcase Policy

From UBC Wiki

Showcasing Definition

We are defining showcasing as a request from one of our partners (or learning community members) to highlight, promote or integrate their content on our site because it is relevant to students and to our mission. The graphic below represents the process. LC Content Requests.png

Principles

Decisions about whether and which content to include on the Learning Commons site will be guided by the following principles:

  • Relevant to student academic life
  • Lends well to student "lens" on the issue
  • Shelf-life determines strategy

Shelf-life refers to the time-sensitivity of the content proposed for the site. Is it to promote an important student-led event or conference which will happen and end? Or is it related to a service or resource that is ongoing?

Guidelines

1. Content will be "filtered" through a student lens.

  • students may author a post highlighting the content and its relevance to students. Focus will be on approaching topic from the view "how might this impact your learning?"
  • students may conduct an interview on the topic with a representative or student involved in project to be highlighted. Interviews may be posted to our YouTube Channel for embedding in the site.
  • decisions regarding the approach to content will be made in conjunction with the Learning Commons Web Team and brought forward for implementation to the Learning Commons Editorial Group.

2. Shelf-life will be a consideration when choosing a strategy for the content.

  • short shelf-life events and such will be highlighted in post on homepage and shared via social media and will disappear when no longer relevant.
  • longer shelf-life content (strategic priorities/projects, etc) will be integrated into the site and highlighted using above strategies when "launched".
  • integrated content will be managed at source. Wherever possible we'll use content republishing strategies to integrate content into the LC site (embed, RSS, etc)

3. Our homepage features dynamic content - connecting with the happenings on campus and student academic cycle.

  • the dynamic content (weekly posts and social media participation) is implemented by the Learning Commons Editorial Group.
  • guidance in relation to strategic direction is provided by the Learning Commons Web Team which includes staff representation from Student Development, Chapman Learning Commons/Library and the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology.
