What is the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication?

The Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication is here to support all writers at UBC. Because of projects from first-year papers to lab reports to creative writing projects to dissertations, this is a group that includes everyone – whether or not you specifically identify as a writer (or whether you want to!). The services we offer are based in the belief that everyone has a unique perspective to bring to the scholarly conversation, and our mission is to support this by working cooperatively with you to enhance your understanding of academic genres and discourse, your voice(s) as writers, and their ability to write efficiently and appropriately for all types of assignments and purposes. We do this in a number of ways, including:

  • Through one-on-one appointments, in person or online, booked through WCOnline [link]
  • Through workshops for undergraduate and graduate students, schedule TBA
  • Through hosting and supporting writing communities for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Through Express Lane hours (12-1pm an 3-4pm), where students can stop by for a quick chat about common issues such as citation, punctuation, and questions about grammar

What Services Do We Offer?

All of our services are free and available to all students on campus. We offer one-on-one appointments, drop-in Q&A times, and writing communities for both graduate and undergraduate students. We offer workshops on writing for the LPI in early September and again in January (view schedule and register in WCOnline), and workshops on special topics for graduate students.

We are open M-F from 10am-4pm, with appointments available throughout the day. If you don't have an appointment, stop by anyway as we might have an opening! If you have a quick question that won't take up a full appointment, drop-in to our Express Lane from 12-1pm and 3-4pm every day. We have a limited number of synchronous, online appointments available during the evening hours. Please see WCOnline for more details!

Here are some points to keep in mind when planning your appointments for the semester:

  • Plan ahead! Appointments must be booked at least 24 hours in advance (although walk-ins are welcome if we have the space). You can book your appointment up to 3 weeks in advance, so there is no need to be panicking at the last minute!
  • You can sign up for appointments, workshops, and writing communities via WCOnline (https://ubcca.mywconline.com/).
  • You can book up to 50 minutes with a consultant each week. Some consultants are only available for 50 minute time slots, and some can be booked 25 minutes at a time. Please check WCOnline for more details.
  • If you need to cancel an appointment, please do so through WCOnline at least 24 hours in advance. If you are a no-show for two appointments, you will be blocked from the WCOnline system and will need to call 604-822-1986 to be reinstated.
  • If you are 5 minutes late for a 25-minute appointment or 10 minutes late for a 50-minute appointment, your time slot could be given away to a walk-in. Please be on time!
  • Express Lane times are designed for students who have a quick question - expect to chat with a consultant for 5-10 minutes during this time. If you would like to have a more in-depth conversation about your writing, please book an appointment.
