Learning Commons:Chapman Learning Commons/CLC Discussion Series
Chapman Discussion Series
Program Vision Statement The purpose of our program is to invite academic leaders (professors, graduate students, and upper-year undergraduates) to share their constructive perspectives on issues of significance with UBC students. After being briefly introduced to the topic, participants will contribute their unique experiences and knowledge to its examination. Thus, the topic must be one appropriately addressed to and by an educated, but general audience. It may be an ethical or public policy dilemma. The purpose is not to rehash well-known arguments but to develop new perspectives through the diverse disciplinary lenses that the academic leaders and other participants will bring.
Format of the Program The format of our sessions is designed to break down some of the barriers students might encounter in a typical lecture format. We wish to promote a spirit of collaboration and interaction between the panelists and the audience, so that all will feel a part of an informal discussion. The goal is to promote discussion on topics and problems to promote dialogue and discussion that will encourage the dissemination of knowledge and interchange of ideas.
Have an idea for the Chapman Discussion Series? Please contact Julie Mitchell for more information. Proposal ideas should fit the program vision statement outlined above and the format should allow opportunities for discussion and audience participation. Suggested formats include panel discussions, presentations, or small group discussions. The Chapman Discussion Series is held in the Lillooet room in the Chapman Learning Commons, and needs to be held during Chapman Learning Commons open hours.
