Week 1: Introductions

Please post a short video or audio introducing yourself and telling us about a book you're either currently reading or that you read in the past and enjoyed. Your video/audio can be short (1 min or less) or a little longer, as you wish, and there is no particular thing you need to say. It also doesn't need to be in any way perfect. If you're looking for things to comment on, you could tell us any or all of the following (as you wish):

  • Your name
  • Which program you're in
  • Why you're taking this course
  • What you're looking forward to this semester (could be course-related or not)
  • What book you're currently reading and how you're finding it OR a book you read in the past that you enjoyed.

The Wiki doesn't like .mp4 files, so the best idea is to upload to UBC's Kaltura and post the link here.

This is an experiment as we'd normally be using Canvas for this activity, so let's see how it goes. I'm told Canvas will be up again, hopefully, by the 15th, so we can migrate back to it soon, and if this really doesn't work here, we can do it on Canvas later in the week.

Fiona's intro - Hi Everyone, I'll get us started. See my intro video below. Please note that I created this video before the cyber attack happened so I refer in the video to doing this on the discussion board, which of course we're not, or we're not yet. Also, my video is much longer than yours needs to be as I have a little more I need to say in it. Take a look and I look forward to seeing yours, if you're able to make it work here on the Wiki.

Please post your introductions similarly to how I've done mine, working down the page below mine. Let me know if you encounter any difficulties.

McKenzie Will's Intro - Click here - Lovely to meet you McKenzie and welcome to the course. Good luck on being nearly done! Thanks for introducing us to your book. I keep hearing about that one and it's on my list, but I haven't gotten to it yet. There's something appealing about a utopian sci fi novel with so much dystopia out there! Have a great semester of reading. - Fiona

Kyra Wheatley's Intro - Click here - Nice to see you again Kyra, and welcome to this course! It was interesting to hear about the methods you're using this summer to help yourself discover new materials to read and watch. Your books sound very interesting - thanks for introducing them to us. I have heard about the phenomenon that is Heated Rivalry but have not yet had the time to read those books myself. They are on the TBR list. Have a great semester! - Fiona

Jacquelyn Tew's Intro - Hi! I'm not comfortable recording myself so I'm just writing mine out in text. I'm Jacquelyn/Jackie and I am in MLIS. I am taking this course because I am interested in learning more about readers advisory and the course topics. I am looking forward to exploring genres in this course, especially ones that I have not read too much of. I read a lot, mostly sapphic horror/fantasy/lit fics. A book I finished just yesterday was Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth, about a young lesbian in a small Irish town having to make sense of herself despite the homophobia and strong traditions of her family/friends. I found it to be an amazing book and loved the descriptive writing style the author has. Looking forward to this course this semester! Sounds like a great book, Jacquelyn. Thanks for telling us about it. Welcome to this course and I hope you have a fun summer of exploring new genres! - Fiona

Vanessa Spacey's Intro- Click Here for Audio - Nice to meet you Vanessa. Sounds like you have a busy summer ahead of you, with productive plans. I wish you all the best with those projects. Your book sounds very interesting, as does the one you already read on Gaudi. You'll have to let us know how you like it. Welcome to the course, and I hope you have a great semester. - Fiona

Natasha Dyck's Intro - Click here for audio - Welcome Natasha, and thanks for your compelling introduction to your book. It sounds like a bit of a page turner! Wishing you a great semester, Fiona

Amelia Dolbeare's Intro - Click here for audio - Nice to see you in this course as well Amelia. Love the setting of your book! Medieval times are a fascinating period. Glad you're enjoying it so far, and welcome to the course! - Fiona

Makenzie Pratt's Intro - Click here for video - Welcome Makenzie. I wasn't able to view your video for some reason. I suspect you need to give me permission. I look forward to seeing it. - Fiona

Emily J.'s Intro - Hi! I'm also not comfortable recording myself, so I'm writing an introduction, too! I'm Emily, and I just completed my first year as an MLIS student. I'm taking this course to learn about RA and genres I'm not used to reading. I read mostly literary fiction and non-fiction, so I'm not as familiar with genres like mystery, romance, and fantasy. I'm looking forward to reading more this semester, since I didn't read much fiction this past winter/fall. I'm currently reading The Tenant by Freida McFadden -- it dragged on for a bit and I don't really like their writing style, but the last chapter I read ended with a big plot twist so I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends! Hi Emily, nice to meet you and welcome to the course. I just finished reading that book as well and I know what you mean about it dragging. I found it somewhat inconsistent. I won't say anything more as I don't want to reveal any spoilers :). Enjoy the ending and have a great semester of reading new genres! - Fiona

Teddie B.'s Intro - Click here for audio - Hi Teddie, welcome to the course! I couldn't listen to your introduction as I don't have access. Probably a permissions issue. I look forward to hearing your introduction - Fiona

Liz Carvalho's Intro - Click here for video - Lovely to see you again Liz and welcome to the course! That sounds like quite an undertaking - to read all the Poirot books in one go, when you've not read any before. I will be interested to hear how you like them! There's your mystery requirement for the reading diary met :). Enjoy and I hope you have a fun summer of reading. Congrats on being nearly done! - Fiona
