LFS:Transcribing

From UBC Wiki

The Learning Centre offers for loan to Faculty of Land and Food Systems clients a hardware/software kit to assist in faster transcribing audio recordings to text.

The process requires about 15 minutes of training. To book equipment and training please contact the Learning Centre.

The outline of the workflow is as follows:

  1. Recordings in mp3 format are replayed using Express Scribe.
  2. Suggested playback speed is about 75-80%
  3. MacSpeech (Dragon) Dictate is activated, and functions as the text input device.
  4. Using good-quality earbuds and a microphone, the recording is re-voiced into the text interface while Dictate is running.

The transcription work time ratio using this method has been under 2:1 for single subject interviews. It has also been used with focus groups. Stereo recording is strongly recommended for focus groups.

For more information please contact the developer of this workflow, Morgan Reid in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems Learning Centre at is@landfood.ubc.ca.
