LFS:LC FAQ

From UBC Wiki

Can people call into a Collaborate Ultra session?

Yes, but it’s long distance (the number provided is a Virginia number), so long distance charges will likely be an issue.

I don’t know how to record videos. This is going to take forever.

If you want to create videos, start with a short one (less than 5min) and upload it in your course. You can upload things incrementally as you are creating them. You don’t need to record an hour of content just because your lecture is 3h.

Students may prefer and retain more information in small chunks, something that is not possible in a traditional lecture.

My course doesn’t have enough content now that I have to deliver it online. How am I going to replace it?

Focus on the learning objectives of the course. What do they need to learn in your class? You can use Canvas and other technology to help them learn all the same things - they will just be learning it in a different way. With the prevalence of social media, many students may prefer the online format.

Students are missing out by not being able to interact in person and/or in real time. How can I replace this interaction?

There are many different ways students can interact with each other using technology. They are likely doing it right now. Create the groups and let them decide the platform.

There are too many tools and I have never used any of this stuff. What should I use?

Every instructor in LFS uses Canvas. Most instructors use PowerPoint and other presentation tools. You should use what you feel most comfortable with. Create something with a tool you already know or take this as an opportunity to try something new (at least you won’t have to struggle with overhead projectors now).

What am I going to do for my exams?

Focus on things that are more time-sensitive. The university hasn’t announced how exams are going to be done yet. There are many options available.

Why can’t students see my Media Gallery in Canvas?

You need to go into My Media, edit the video and select your Copyright permissions. Videos will not be visible to anyone without this step. A green PUBLISHED label will appear beside the video in My Media.
