Co-Investigators: Luke Lu, Julian Wu, Jarrod Yang, Ethan Xu

Jarrod Yang:

Hello everyone, my name is Jarrod who is a vantage arts student. I really love shopping in my spare time, especially for collecting shoes, no matter what brand it is. In my opinion, boys are crazy about sneakers and will make a lot of surprising consumption behaviors after becoming addicted to them. However, sometimes shopping may lead a person to become irrational, I'm no exception. Thus, our topic is mainly concentrated on how to develop wise and favorable consuming behavior. Also, we can help you to avoid plenty of traps during shopping.

Luke Lu:

Hi, guys. This is Luke from Vantage Arts program cohort A. Unlike my group members, I’m not that keen on shopping, but I’m really fond of electronic devices such as Apple products. I love pursuing them, and as iPhone releases almost once or twice a year, that urges me to buy every single one of them every time it releases a new version. That concerns me, not only of my economic status but also the massive waste I create by purchasing them every year. That’s why I, with the three young men above who have similar questions that I have regards to over-consumption and try to explore the deeper reasons behind the insanity of our shopping. As we go further, we find a shocking secret behind all this...

Julian Wu:
Hi, everyone, I am Julian, one of the vantage arts student, who is an inexperienced researcher and an experienced shopper. Nowadays, as our consumption patterns gradually become diversified, it provides us more ways and time to consume. As a person who pursues fashion, I am keen on consumption and often make impulsive consumption behaviors, including buying a variety of sneakers and fast-changing clothes. I am absorbed in online shopping during the shopping festival like Double 11 and Black Friday. However, as the express packages are opened, most of the products end up like garbage in my closet after one or two uses, and I often find myself had so many clothes when I pick up the locker room. Therefore, I am very interested in this topic and want to explore the secrets hidden behind my impulsive consumption behavior through a series of research.

Ethan Xu:

Hi everybody, I’m Ethan from Vantage arts stream, a poor research new fish and a hardcore gamer. Nowadays, everything takes money, as a gamer, I can’t agree with this more. All kinds of discounts from the game platform, the impulse to purchase new hardware for better graphic performance, in-game purchase for better outfits or power, etc. Gamers, like everybody else in contemporary society, is troubled by consumption. For my own interest, and the ambitiousness to help consumers in the broader scale, we developed this approach to provide suggestions.

Why should you pay attention to the research?

Consumption behaviors and internal awareness of sustainability seems two irrelevant and improbable topics, but we believe consumptions as indispensable part of daily lives and society functioning indeed can be formulated more sustainably. Overall, the importance of sustainability is keeping being strengthened in the globalizing community, we would like to investigate the “big” question: How does the bonding between consumers’ self-assessment of sustainability and their consumption behaviours during shopping festivals (eg. Black Friday) affect one another reciprocally in the Chinese international student community?'
