I am Naomi Chen and from Vantage Art. I want to major in Economies in the future. In my spare time, I like to stay at home watching movies or playing video games. In addition, I am a foodie and I enjoy finding fabulous restaurants with my friends. The reason I think our topic is great is that I used to love buying disposable fashion and most of them I only wore a few times. I did not realize the importance of recycling and sustainability. Therefore, I believe our research can help more people like me who lack environmental awareness and help them to establish a better consumption habit.

I am Yuran Zhang, an undergraduate student in Vantage program. I am currently focusing on the project of disposable fashion and shopping habits of international students from developing countries. I enjoy working out and travelling around that can empower and energize myself in after hours. I really appreciate the benefits Vantage college has brought me. I learn to be respectful, sincere and keen on academic study. At the time that the ecosystem and environment are vulnerable, my group found that it is fairly important to raise awareness of consuming sustainable fashion. So, we conduct a survey that investigates the solution that can persuade consumer’s habits.

I am Yuyao Liu, a student at Vantage College, and I am interested in major humanities. For personal hobbies, I enjoy drawing pictures and travelling to different places to experience various cultures. As a young person who is more concerned about fashion, I recognized its relations with the current popular word “sustainability”. What I believe is that every tiny thing we do and see in our daily lives matters for the realization of sustainability. In this research, I will try my best to make the connections between disposable fashion and sustainability with my peers.

I am Dylan Dang. So far, I am a Vantage arts student. In my free time, I like to travel around to feel the diverse culture rest in our life. And in this process, I observed more and more teenagers have a pursuit of fashion nowadays. However, it may accompany with a huge amount of waste. In our group project, we try to investigate factors that can influence a person in developing countries on whether to take a sustainable decision. Our research may help many other people in developing countries to raise awareness of environmental protection and at the same time keep their pursuit of fashion.

ABSTRACT

Our research question is: What are the barriers or facilitators towards making sustainable recycle decisions regarding disposable fashion products? Disposable fashion is a fresh concept that used by clothes retailers to catch the fashion trend in contemporary society (Tony & Margaret, 2007). Fast fashion is especially popular among young consumers who pursue low prices and fashion elements (Daddi et al., 2019). However, this consumption habits generate a vast amount of textile garbage and threaten human-beings' pursuit of sustainability. Our project is an empirical exploration to find current attitudes held by Vantage students on disposable fashion and recycling nowadays. Different from the previous studies, this research will contribute to the data from developing countries. We used quantitative analysis by collecting the data from 43 students in Vantage with Qualtrics survey. In this project, we are using the data summaries method to analyze the survey data. According to our analysis, we find that most of the participants know the importance of sustainable fashion. However, about half of the participants only sometimes recycling their unwanted clothing and they lack information about the method of recycling. Moreover, our participants suggest increasing media advertisements and build more recycling bins to improve people’s willingness to recycle clothes. This will encourage more students to improve their habits of recycling fast fashion.
