Gender symmetry: fundamentally assumes that there is an overall equal use of violence that is not determined by gender (systems theory, ecological theory, resource theory, etc).

Gender asymmetry: argues that it is overwhelmingly women who are the victims of IPV at the hands of men (feminist perspective).
