Introduction

Donald J. Trump’s term as the current president of the United States began in January 2017, marking it as one of the most upsetting event in American political history. With a combination of a polling ceiling of about 44 percent[1] and a consistent unfavorability rating[2] out of all the past presidential nominees, Trump’s victory created a national and international havoc. During his election period, Trump guaranteed a promising change to his supporters with a provocative rhetoric to “make America great again”. During his campaigning, he promised to make the following changes to immigration, trade, taxes and foreign policy. However, instead of focusing on what he promised in his campaign, he resorted to capitalizing on their economic worries, taking advantage of the racial tensions overwhelming the state and denying a string of sexual assault allegations on his way to the claiming the place of being the 45th president of the United States.

Keeping his promises made during the campaigning process, Trump has attempted to tighten up national security by enforcing on new immigration rules. However his new immigration rules consists of building an impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful, southern border wall between the US and Mexico.[3] In addition, Trump will insist on Mexico to pay for the wall in order to control border crossing. This wall symbolizes the strict control of where one state ends and another begins, drawing a simple distinction of two separating countries. It enforces on the wealth inequality prominent in both the United States and Mexico. Throughout his campaigning process, Trump has displayed countless of racist retorts towards Mexico, as emphasized through the racist monument of the physical wall.[4]

Discrimination is rooted by the unfair social system which is associated with the treatments dealt with issues such as power and status. When there is more privilege in a majority group, inequality will exist. Associated with racial discrimination, Trump has demonstrated such acts through his campaigning process and his time in office. The republican carried out his promises on change to immigration and national security by proposing an immediate act of the travel ban. This travel ban is a discrimination against Muslim which bans people located in six Muslim majority countries: Libya, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. [5]In addition, he also suspended entry to refugee applicants for 120 days. The first statement was issued in January 27th which created a chaotic tension and abrupt protests in airports. Traces of discrimination against the marginalized were accused because of the dominant figure manipulating their power over the less privileged ones. However, the government argues that the regulation doesn’t target and discriminate against a religion, instead, the regulation of the travel ban is to increase national security.

Sexism

In this presidency election, Trump has expressed himself in the way that no president has. In contradiction, instead of repulsing him, the public has done the opposite. Trump’s false allegations and some of his false name-calling demonstrated the sexist discrimination he has been suggesting to the public. Over the course of his election, Trump has had multiple incidents in which he has offended women. From saying no one would vote for his former rival Carly Fiorina because of her face to suggesting that women should be “punished” for having abortions and “joking that he’d date his daughter.[6]One of the many allegations that Trump has made towards women was erupted during the first Republican debate of this campaign when he was accused of sexism. After the debate, he started questioning journalist Megyn Kelly’s attack during the debate resulting from a possible menstruation cycle. However, throughout the presidential election, more traces of sexism was shown through Trump’s past and present times. At the beginning of October, the combined numerous number of women who accused Trump of sexual assault seemed to, ironically, bring him to the finish line.[7]More specifically, October 7, 2016, Trump discusses in a leaked video to “grab (women) by the pussy” and states that “when you’re a star, they let you do it.” [8] In this video, the republican was seen using aggressive language in order to brag about enticing women.
