Summary

Description
English: Tar sand from Alberta, Canada.

Tar sandstones and tar sands are oil-impregnated reservoir rocks that have been subjected to long periods of weathering and petroleum degradation. The largest deposit in the world is the Athabasca Tar Sand (Athabasca Oil Sand) of Alberta. Albertan tar sands have been targeted for mining since the 1970s.

This sample really isn't a sandstone - it's not lithified. It's more of a considerably tacky sand.

Stratigraphy: McMurray Formation (Aptian) or Wabiskaw Memeber of the Clearwater Formation (Albian), Mannville Group, upper Lower Cretaceous

Locality: unrecorded site at or near (likely north of) the town of Fort McMurray, northeastern Alberta, west-central Canada
