by Tony Bates
Study about integrating tech in uni
Why uni must change
- pressure to change
- massification of education
- teaching doesn't work
main aim measure how tech integrated
- how many use tech
- what kind of innovation is taking place
Key results
- increase flexibility of access for diverse student body
- avg age 24. of student working, life long learners
- increase personalization of learning and interaction
- develop 21t century skills, independent study,
- increase cost effectiveness
Conclusion
- how do you measure things? to conservative and not measurable goals
- Admin people not prepared to make decisions about tech
- Profs not trained to teach
- no institution knew the cost of learning
- true cost of activity, measure the activity ( no data )
- is it easier to train profs or hire developers?
Results in context
- management is messy
- tech only one aspect of management
- admin people were doing their best
- good management at UBC
- fear of managerial-ism, billion dollar budget
Conclusion
- overall lack of innovation at an institutional level
- lack of new models for combining
- Strategic Goal should to innovation teaching and reward it
