Hands-on: Creating Pages
Using the examples of sites consider how you could set up pages on your own site. How many pages would you create? What content would they hold? How would they be organized? What would you like the front page of your site to look like?
- Create at least three pages for your site. Include headings, text and formatting.
- At least one of the pages should be a sub-page.
Hands-on: Creating & Formatting a Post
- From the Dashboard, create a new Post and add a title
- Format your post using the Kitchen Sink
- Add or select a category and add a tag
- Publish your Page
- Click Visit Site and see what your site looks like now
Try creating at least three posts for your site
Hands-on: Add Media to your Pages/Posts
- Select one of your posts or pages by browsing through All Pages or All Posts
- Add and title a PDF file to your site from the WordPress Media folder on the desktop
- Add an image to a page or a post on your site from the WordPress Media folder. Give the image alt text and attribute the image using the Caption form
- Using the media folder add images and media to your site
Hands-on Activity: Themes and Headers
- Select a theme for your site from the list keeping in mind the different column configurations (one, two or three) and the functionality of the theme (customized image header, custom menus)
- Customize your theme header
Hands-on Activity: Embedding Content
Beginner Activity
- Go to http://wiki.ubc.ca and search for any wiki page
- Go to the Toolbox section on the left sidebar and click on Embed Page
- Copy all the text/embed code that appears
- Go to your blog's Dashboard and add a new post
- Click on HTML tab and paste the embed code
- Click Publish and view your post
Intermediate Activity
- Go to http://youtube.com and search for a video
- Click on the Share button (1) below the video
- Click on Embed (2) and choose a size you prefer (3)
- Copy the embed code (4)
- Return to your blog's Dashboard and add a new post
- Click on the HTML tab and paste the embed code
- Click Publish and view your post
Advanced Activity
- Go to http://www.flickr.com
- At the top of the page, click on Search and then click on Advanced Search
- Scroll to the very bottom, and click on Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content. Also click both check boxes for: Find content to use commercially and Find content to modify, adapt, or build upon
- Search and choose the desired image.
- Above the image, click on the Share button (1) for more options. Make sure you are in the tab that says Grab the HTML/BBCode
- Choose the size you like on the drop down menu (2)
- Copy the embed code that was given to you (3)
- Return to your blog's Dashboard and add a new post
- Click the HTML tab and paste in the embed code
- Go back to the Visual tab and click on the image
- Click on the first icon to edit the image
- Provide attribution by adding the image's creator in the Caption area and click update.
- Click Publish and view your post
Hands-on Activity: Adding Widgets
Beginner Activity
- From the Dashboard, under Appearance, click on Widgets
- Drag and drop the Tag Cloud, Categories, or Pages in the Primary Widget Area
- Review the custom settings on the widget
- Click Save and visit your site.
- What other widgets can you use to help visitors navigate around your site?
Advance Activity
- From the Dashboard, under Appearance, click on Widgets
- Drag and drop the Text Widget onto SideBar 1 - right hand side the page
- Review the custom settings on the widget
- Click Visit Site and see what your webspace looks like now!
- Repeat the above steps and add the Text Widget to your webspace
