Welcome to the sewing page! Here you can find information about using our Brother HC3010 Sewing Machine. If you would like to use the sewing machine, please speak to the Makerspace Technician or a trained TA.

Specs and Features

In the makerspace we have the Brother HC3010 Sewing and Quilting Machine which is a computerized sewing machine.

Stitch Width: 7 mm

Stitch Length: 5 mm

Max. Sewing Speed: 850 stitches per minute

Key Features:

  • 130 built-in stitches including 8-step button hole
  • 1 built-in embroidery front
  • Free arm and extension table

Presser Feet: Blind stitch foot, Button sewing foot, Buttonhole foot, Monogramming foot, Overcasting stitch foot, Quilting foot, Zigzag foot, Zipper foot

Please note that this model of sewing machine is not compatible with standard size bobbins. We have extra bobbins available for you to use in the Makerspace, please do not bring in your own.

Using the Sewing Machine

The sewing machine comes with a very extensive and helpful manual. It is recommended you have it on hand anytime you are using the sewing machine. You can find it here.

Access

Before using the sewing machine please ask for permission from the Makerspace Technician or a TA who has experience with sewing. Please have your fabric, thread and materials available so that we can check them before you begin sewing.

Needles and Presser Foot

Needles: Before you begin sewing, please make sure you have the correct needle for your material. To help you determine which needle you need, you can check out this guide from Brother or for more extensive information you can check out this online guide. Please do not change the needle yourself, always ask for assistance from someone on the teaching team.

Presser Feet: Different stitches require different presser feet. The Brother YouTube Channel has several videos explaining the uses for the various presser feet which you can see here. Please refer to page 34 of the manual to see how to switch the presser foot.

Threading the Sewing Machine

Before threading the machine, make sure that the machine is turned off! If this is your first time using the machine, please ask for assistance with threading the machine. You can find directions to thread the machine using this Quick Reference Guide or on page 15 of the manual. You can also take a look at the videos below.
