Documentation:Kaltura/FAQ/4. Sharing videos with the students of a course (Course Gallery)
Sharing videos with the students of a course (Course Gallery)
Add a video from My Media to a Course Gallery
- Go to ‘My Media’
- Select the video
- Click the ‘Add to Course Gallery’ button under the video, select the desired course from the drop-down menu and click OK.
- Go to the Course Gallery;
- Select the video;
- Check the box “Make this Item Public in Gallery”.
If this is not checked, then the instructor is the only person who can see the video in the Course Gallery. If it is checked, everyone who has access to Course Gallery can see it. Students can upload videos into the Course Gallery, but it displays as ‘Hidden’. Faculty must go to the Course Gallery and ‘make public in Gallery’, in order for other students to see the video in the Course Gallery.
Make a video featured (Display it in the Course Gallery box on course homepage)
Only the instructor of the course can make a video featured.
- Go to the Course Gallery;
- Select the video;
- Check the option “Make this Item Public in Gallery”;
- Then check the option “Add to Gallery Module on course homepage”.
- Go to the Course Gallery;
- Select the video;
- Check the option “Make this Item Public in Gallery”;
- Then check the option “Display Embed Code”;
- Copy the code;
- Paste the code in the desired HTML file or editor outside Kaltura.
Only Faculty can display embed codes. Students may use an embed code for a video, if the faculty member has enabled this function for a particular video in a course. For the videos uploaded/recorded by students and published to the course gallery, students must ask the instructor to display the embed code.

Common issues in using Course Gallery
Unable to add a video from My Media to Course Gallery: the course title is not on the list.
When the “Availability” of a course is set to “No”, or the current date deos not fall in the course “Duration” (i.e. between “Start date” and “End date”), the course title will not appear on the drop-down list in My Media and the user will not be able to add videos to the Course Gallery of the course. This is a known issue. There are two workarounds:
- Change the course availability and duration: on the left menu, under “Customization”, click “properties”, then set Availability and Duration.
- Go to the Course Gallery for the Course, and upload the videos from there: click the ‘Upload or Record from Webcam’ button, and open the ‘My Content’ tab, leave the search field blank and hit the ‘Search’ button (this shows the 10 first vide
os from your ‘My Media’ and allows you to add them directly to the Course Gallery). Alternatively, you can open the ‘Upload’ tab (which uploads from your computer) or the ‘Webcam’ (which records a new video from your webcam).
Unable to add video from My Media to the Course Gallery: “My Content” tab doesn’t show all my videos.
In the Course Gallery, it is possible to display the videos located in “My Media” and directly add them to the Course Gallery by clicking the ‘Upload or Record from Webcam’ button and openning the “My Content” tab. However, there are 3 known issues with the ‘My Content’ tab in the Course Gallery:
- When you open the ‘My Content’ tab, no videos show on the screen: users need to hit ‘Search’ with a blank Searh box to see their videos.
- If you have more than 10 videos in your MyMedia, then it only shows the first 10 videos on the screen, with no scroll bar.
- When you Search for a video, you have to enter the full first word of the title. For example if the video is titled ‘Share and Download Test’, then if you enter ‘Sha’ in the Search box, it does not find any videos. If you enter ‘Share’ in the Search box it finds the video.
The Video Share team is working with Kaltura to resolve these issues.
Only the instructor of the course can make the video visible for students as follows:
- Go the Course Gallery
- Select the video.
- Check the box “Make this Item Public in Gallery”.
