Theme Session Development

One of the goals for the Faculty ISW in 2019 is to develop a set of theme sessions that focus on topics and areas that are important for CTLT and UBC but facilitators do not always have the time to develop. On February 13, 2019 staff facilitators met for one hour to come up with potential topics, discuss the overall context of sharing lesson plans and begin developing theme sessions.

Context of Sharing Lessons

During the session we discussed the challenges and context when sharing lesson plans with other facilitators

Considerations

  • If a facilitator uses a lesson plan that they did not develop, the lesson plan may be become like a script only. This can take away from the lesson
  • A workshop has elements that are not written in a lesson plan including:
  • Background
  • Questions
  • Approach

What are some ways that we can support facilitators use these lessons plans

  • Include the lesson plans creators name so that facilitators can contact them to discuss
  • Readings that the lesson plan are based on
  • Detailed lesson plan notes that describe elements not always included
  • Notes describing times the lesson plan was facilitated, what was successful - ways it was adapted
  • Facilitators often use only certain elements of lesson plans i.e. activities.

Potential Theme Sessions

The following is a list of the possible theme sessions. In the FISW these lessons are often run on Day 2 or Day 3 of the ISW after completing core sessions such as lesson basics, learning objectives, assessment, motivation. This is an evolving list:
