Getting to know the discussion board

The following activity will help you become familiar with the discussion board.

To get started, you're going to introduce yourself to the class.

  1. In the course tools menu, go to the Discussions tool.
  2. Navigate to the 'Introductions' forum.
  3. Create a new thread and give it the subject 'Introduction | Your name'.
  4. Introduce yourself to your classmates.
  5. Use the WYSIWYG editor to change the font or formatting.
  6. Try attaching a document or image to your message. You can also add Flash files, YouTube videos, or Flickr mashups. Choose something that represents your life in some way: your city, a pet, your favourite food or a picture of yourself. Choose whatever you like.
  7. Tell your classmates why you have chosen this item.
  8. Submit the message.

Add media files to enhance your message.

Next, you're going to subscribe to this forum so you will be notified when others have posted their introductions.

  1. In the course tools menu, go to the Discussions tool.
  2. Navigate to the 'Introductions' forum.
  3. Select the 'Subscribe' feature at the top of the forum.
  4. When someone has posted an introduction, you will receive notification in your email.
  5. When you receive notification of a new post, navigate back to the 'Introductions' forum and reply to the message.
  6. You can subscribe/unsubscribe to a forum at any time. You can also subscribe to individual discussion threads.
