Course Content

Course Menu

The course menu on the left-hand side bar can be a mix of content areas and direct tools links.

Content Areas

Instructors create content areas to organize the course materials such as readings, assignments, discussion forum link based on their course structure (e.g. By week, By topic).

Content Items

Content items are the different kinds of course materials you can add to a content area such as URLs, HTML pages and syllabi.

Content Collection & Copyright

The Content Collection is where all of your course files are stored. You will need to include the copyright information for each file.

Course Reserves

Course Reserves allows you create a single list of articles, book chapters, and other media resources for your students to access from the UBC Library for use in your courses.

Kaltura

Kaltura is a video platform where you can integrate video into your course activities (e.g. video assignments, lecture capture).

Weblog or blog is a tool used for personal online journals, discussions or a course space. In Connect, there are two blog tools available: Connect Blogs and UBC Blogs.

Voice Board

Piazza

Piazza is a Q&A style forum that can be easily integrated with Connect. Piazza allows:

  • Students and Instructors to post questions. Other students’ or Instructors can answer to the question.
  • Instructors and students to endorse students’ questions and answers.
  • Instructors to check the statistics to see contributions from the students.

Email

Send email messages from within Connect to your students using your email address from the Faculty Service Centre (FSC).

Group

Create student groups for course projects and peer to peer support.

Instant Messaging

Blackboard Instant Messaging (BbIM) is an instant messaging tool that can support study groups, meetings and office hours via web conferencing, VoIP and collaborative whiteboards.

iPeer

iPeer is a web application integrated into Connect to develop and deliver rubric-based peer evaluations.

Send internal text-based messages to other course participants that can only be accessed and archived within the course.

A collaborative writing tool where you and your students can easily act as writer, editor, and publisher.

Assignments

Assignments may ask for text, to attach a file, enter comments, or a combination of these actions for submission.

Clickers

Clickers (or Student Response Systems) are wireless handheld devices that allow students to respond to classroom polls and quizzes, regardless of class size and common student dynamics.

Respondus Quiz

Respondus Quiz is a tool for creating and managing exams and quizzes that can be printed to paper or published directly to your Connect course.

Rubrics

Create and attach rubrics for any graded course activity to help students understand how they will be assessed.

Tests, Surveys and Pools

The Assessments Tool (i.e. tests and surveys) in Connect allows you to offer tests to students that are auto-marked by the computer and provide them the opportunity to practice and receive just-in-time feedback on their results.
