There are many ways you can manage discussion thread posts by using the Thread Actions menu. Both students and instructors can manage thread content by marking posts as read, flagging them, or subscribing to threads. Instructors can also use the Thread Actions menu to control student access and visibility of the threads and posts within the thread.

Access the Thread Actions button

  1. Access the Discussion Board
  2. Open a Discussion Board Thread
  3. Click the Thread Actions button on the top of the screen to view the options

Use the Thread Actions button as an instructor

  1. Select threads using by selecting the check-box to the left of the thread title
  2. Select one of the following actions from the Thread Actions menu
  • Mark as Read/Unread: Unread threads appear in bold text, use this button to mark threads as read or unread.
  • Set Flag/Clear Flag: Flagging threads puts a flag icon to the right of the thread's check-box. Flag threads to mark them for later and Unflag them when you are finished.
  • Publish: If you have created a threads and saved them as drafts, you can use the Publish action to make the thread available to all students.
  • Hide: Use the Hide action to remove the thread from immediate view, but students can still access hidden threads using the action bar at the top of the screen. Students will not be able to reply to or edit hidden threads, even if editing has been enabled for the thread.
  • Make Unavailable: Hides the thread from view of all discussion board roles except forum Managers.
  • Lock/Unlock: Allows students to read the thread, but not edit or add to it. Locking a thread allows grades to be assigned without students updating or changing posts. You can also unlock a locked thread to open it back up to students.
  • Subscribe/Unsubscribe: You can subscribe to a thread to receive an email alert when a post is updated or a reply is posted. Instructors must enable this function when creating a forum, or edit an existing forum to allow subscriptions.

Use the Thread Actions button as a student

  • Mark as Read/Unread: Unread threads appear in bold text, use this button to mark threads as read or unread.
  • Set Flag/Clear Flag: Flagging threads puts a flag icon to the right of the thread's check-box. Flag threads to mark them for later and Unflag them when you are finished.
  • Subscribe/Unsubscribe: You can subscribe to a thread to receive an email alert when a post is updated or a reply is posted. If the option to subscribe to the thread is not available, ask your instructor to enable this function by editing the forum options to allow subscriptions.
