When you create a test, a column is automatically added in the Grade Center to record student performance. After a test is created, it must be linked to a Content Area and made available to students

This document will show you how to:

  • Create a test
  • Add the test questions
  • Deploy the test to students

Create a test

  1. From the Course Management menu on the left-hand side, click Control Panel
  2. Click Tests, Surveys, and Pools under Course Tools
    The Tests, Surveys, and Pools link is under Course Tools in the Course Management menu.
  3. Select Test
  4. Click Build Test at the top of the page
  5. In the Test Information section, add a name for the test
  6. Enter a test description
  7. In the Instructions section, enter student instructions for the test
  8. Click Submit, either at the top or bottom of the page

The test is now visible in the Test Canvas page where you can add test questions immediately or come back at a later date.

Add the test questions

When adding a test question, you can choose to create a new question from scratch, reuse existing questions or question sets from previous assessments, upload new test questions from your local drive.

General settings that affect all of the questions you create or use for a test, take some time to explore the Question Settings found on the top right-hand side when you are adding test questions.

Changes to the Question Settings will affect all questions created or used for a particular test.

  1. Return to the Test area
  2. Click the drop-down arrow besides a test's name while hovering over it
  3. Click Edit
    To add a test question, you have to edit a test.
  4. Bring your cursor to Reuse Questions at the top of the page and click Create Question Set
  5. Search for your desired question by typing in a key word, and expanding menu items under the Browse Criteria on the left side of the screen. Such as, search for existing questions in Pools by expanding the Pools menu, select a pool, then further narrow your search by selecting Question Types and browse questions of the type desired
  6. Select the questions that meet your search criteria by checking the box next to their title
  7. Click Submit
    A pop-up window will appear when you Create a Question Set.

By default, new questions or question sets are placed at the bottom of the test. You can drag and drop to arrange them in the order you desire.

Deploy the test to students

Deploying a test means the test will be made available to students.

  1. Select a Content Area to deploy the test to
  2. Click Test under Assessments at the top of the page
    The Test under Assessments in a content area allows you to add tests together with your course's content.
  3. Select an existing test from the menu to deploy
  4. Click Submit at the top or bottom of the page
  5. Modify or add information to the Test Options page, if desired:
    • In the 1. Test Information section, add descriptions to the test
    • In the 2. Test Availability section, set the test availability settings and options
    • In the 3. Due Date section, set the deadline for the assessment
    • In the 4. Self-assessment Options section, choose to include the test in the Grade Center or as a no-risk practice activity
    • In the 5. Test Feedback section, select the type of feedback that will be given
    • In the 6. Test Presentation section, select how the test questions will be presented to students
  6. Click Submit at the bottom or top of the page to deploy the test to students
