Multiple choice questions include a question with up to 20 answers provided with each question to students who must then select the correct answer to the question.

This document will show you how to:

  • Create a multiple choice question
  • Define the answer choices and specify the correct answer
  • Enter feedback and set point value

Create a multiple choice question

  1. From the Course Management menu on the left-hand side, select the Control Panel
  2. Under Course Tools, click Tests, Surveys, and Pools
  3. Click Test
    Tests, Surveys, and Pools link is found under Course Tools in the Course Management menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
  4. Edit an existing test by clicking the face-down arrow beside a test's name when you hover over it
    Note: You can also create a new test clicking Build Test at the top of the page
  5. Click Edit
    The Edit button can be accessed by hovering over a test's name and clicking the face-down arrow.
  6. Click Create Question at the top of the page
  7. Click Multiple Choice

Define the answer choices and specify the correct answer

  1. In the 1. Question section, enter the question text
  2. In the 2. Options section, choose how the questions will be numbered
  3. Choose to display answers vertically or horizontally
  4. Select if partial credit will be given
  5. Select if the question answers should be displayed in a random order
  6. In the 3. Answers section, select the number of possible answers
  7. For each possible answer, enter the answer text
  8. Click the circle on the top left corner, beside an answer box to choose the correct answer
    Click the circle at the top-left corner, beside each possible to indicate it as the correct answer.

Enter feedback and set point value

  1. In the 4. Feedback section, enter responses to be displayed to students for incorrect and correct answers
  2. In the 5. Categories and Key Words section, add descriptive words for the question to make it easier for you to search and use in future tests
  3. (Optional) Add instructor notes
    Note: Instructor notes are only visible to you or fellow instructors. It can be an opportunity for you to write down the ideas and goals behind the question for future reference.
  4. Click Submit at the top or bottom of the page
  5. The new multiple choice question appears at the bottom of the Test Canvas page, enter the point value of the question in the Points box in the top left corner of the question
    Input a new point value for the question in the points box on the top-right corner of the question item.
