Vista and Copyright Compliance
UBC is transitioning to a new copyright environment. As this will affect your online Vista environment, this workshop will focus on steps to ensure that your Vista content is compliant with copyright law. Facilitators will answer Vista content copyright questions and provide assistance and methods for examining course content to ensure copyright compliance.

How do I get started to check my course to ensure compliance?
The copyright at UBC website features a Flowchart to guide you through checking copyright compliance.
Uploading scanned pdfs and other documents
Permission is required to scan and post content from copyrighted works. You may NOT scan or otherwise convert any articles to a format that you upload

You may link to copyrighted content through persistent links for articles that UBC has permission to access.

Best Practices for linking to course readings
Linking to Websites, Podcasts or YouTube
You may link to websites, podcasts, blogs and YouTube content. It is good practice to place the link information in the description. You may NOT download, convert and upload YouTube into your Vista course for offline access.
Images on Vista
Any images or custom icons used in Vista must be copyright approved for use. Faculty are allowed to use Microsoft images however in PowerPoints and other documents to be put on Vista. The copyright owner agrees to these terms when they post their image on on the Microsoft Office website. UBC also has images available through Artstoror faculty may find images under creative commons licensing that they can use on sites like flickr
Images in PowerPoint
Images should always include credit and source information. They may be used for presentation purposes in the classroom, however to include them in a PowerPoint that you post on Vista, faculty should confirm that they are satisfying the fair dealing exception such as text book images being used for review or critique. You may not upload scanned chapters from a book without copyright permission. There may be alternatives in the form of electronic access or you may with to use a Course Pack.
