Getting Started With Technology at UBC Okanagan

Welcome to UBC O where you are going to hear many technological terms such as Novell, Vista, FSC, CWL etc…

This session will cover important aspects of accessing technology at UBC O both on campus and off campus. Access your Novell account and F drive space where you can store and back up your important files and documents, library databases, Vista Course Management software, Faculty Service Centre, wireless internet, using the virtual private network (VPN), UBC email, booking equipment and so much more. This is your one-stop computing resource site for UBC's Okanagan campus. Here you will find online resources for quick tips on how to get started, find solutions to your technology problems, and enhance your experience and productivity through better understanding of the technology and tools available to you.

1. Novell / Netstorage, CWL http://web.ubc.ca/okanagan/itservices/accounts.html You will have designated space on the server for storing documents and backups. You can access these from anywhere by going to: http://netstorage.ok.ubc.ca and using your Novell login.
2. WebMail access http://webmail.ok.ubc.ca UBC Webmail is available on any computer that has internet access.
3. Campus Printing http://iprint.ok.ubc.ca
4. Work orders and booking equipment / AV http://helpdesk.ok.ubc.ca
5. VPN set up http://www.it.ubc.ca/security/VPN.html The virtual private network allows you to access library resources from your home computer or laptop from virtually any location. You can also type myvpn.ubc.ca into address bar and use your CWL ID to access the virtual private network.
6. Getting support 79000 http://web.ubc.ca/okanagan/itservices/contact.html Technology Classroom support is available from 8-4 Monday through Friday and the 807-9000 number is for classroom emergencies and the IT support team does their utmost to provide immediate support when called during class time.
7. Support for Research http://web.ubc.ca/okanagan/research/it.html There are a variety of resources available for instructors and faculty engaged in research, including:

  • Research Grant Support
  • Campus Wide Research Equipment and Resources
  • Collaboration Tools
  • External Research Systems and Consortia Partnerships

Faculty Service Centre (FSC)

http://web.ubc.ca/okanagan/facultystaff/current-faculty.html There are many resources available for faculty at UBC Okanagan. The Faculty Service Centre is the site where you will find class lists (with pictures) and this is where you must enter the final official grades for your students.

FSC Login
 https://ssc.adm.ubc.ca/fsc/servlets/SRVFSCFramework (requires CWL ID).  If you attempt to login and do not have access to the courses you are teaching, you will need to request access by filling out the form at https://secure.students.ubc.ca/okanagan/facultystaff/fsc.cfm?go=access .  Please note that this can take up to 48 hours therefore, you do not want to leave it to the last minute.

RefWorks is a free tool for students and faculty for online research management, including writing and collaboration tools where you can share your resources.

Elearning

E-learning refers to technology enhanced learning, including the use of mobile technologies, web-based teaching materials, multimedia, collaborative social software tools, and course management software such as WebCT Vista. Here at UBC many of our instructors use a combination of technologies to support and enhance the face to face teaching environment.
