For a number of years various initiatives have been undertaken to identify the needs of academic leaders to ensure their success in their roles. In 2006, a consulting firm, Leading by Design Inc. (Glenn Harris and Alice Mansell) was approached to conduct an assessment of the learning needs of heads and directors in their administrative roles at UBC.
The following 5 key elements are the main components of the Academic Leaders Development Program (ALDP). These may be expanded and/or refined over time:
- Program for Heads and Directors – first and second year
- Peer mentoring
- Workshops/seminars on topical matters
- Consideration of an ongoing initiative for leadership training
