Overview

Please note that this workshop is developed with the Winter Institute Facilitators in mind; however, it is open to those who may have an interest in further developing their facilitation skills in general.

Do We Walk Our Talk? Creating Inclusive Workshop for a Diverse Learning and Teaching Community

While the goal of the Winter Institute is to create sustainable, inclusive, and thriving learning communities and many of us are bringing a wide range of amazing strategies to help each other optimize our learning environments, have we examined our own facilitation practices to ensure that we walk what we talk?

In order to reflect on current facilitation practices, participants are encouraged to bring an old or current workshop plan that they are prepared to scribble over with new ideas!

By the end of this facilitation development workshop, participants (and facilitators at various context) will begin to:

  • Explore the diverse needs of our participants: faculty, staff, and maybe students
  • Develop steps to find out needs of our participants
  • Modify our workshop designs to create a more inclusive environment
  • Bring an old or current workshop plan you have and be prepared to scribble over it with new ideas!

Reflection

(5 min) On your own:

(20 min) As a group:

  • Share the experience
  • Pay attention to why may the facilitators do to avoid such 'exclusion'
  • Review Guideline on Accessibility and Inclusivity developed by CTLT EDSC (see link in Resources below)

Large Group Debrief
