Democracy in Action

From UBC Wiki

How does democracy work in the Canadian government you ask?

Well, it all begins with the calling of an election that is called once every 5 years to select who will represent Canadians in the House of Commons. The Prime Minister then asks the Governor General to dissolve Parliament. After the dissolving of parliament, the candidates start their campaigns, these campaigns are aimed to prove and show the citizens of Canada how these candidates will help the communities and situations that Canadian citizens live in and face everyday. The candidates do this through debates, door to door greets, signs, ETC. During the race for the number one spot, the candidates also have the support of their political party that the candidate also represents and tries to show the citizens how he or she along with the help of the political party will help the citizens of Canada if they win. When election day comes up, citizens 18 years and older will have the opportunity to vote for the political party that they see best fitting to run Canada for the next few years. When the election is over the winning party and its candidates are now referred to as members of parliament; these members are also known as MPs for short. After the selection of the MPs, the forming of government is underway.
