Objectives and Theories

Let's propose some objectives and theories In this discussion.

For my first set of question my objective is to see whether or not there is any relationship between people's political affiliations, income, feelings towards businesses and how they voted int he HST. I would theorize that those who have a higher income and have favourable feelings towards business would have voted to keep the HST.

I like what you have done so far and the objectives you are trying to achieve. I think we could also consider whether or not the person owns or manages their own independent or small business or whether or not they are part of a labour union.

we may also want to consider asking if the survey subjects are a member of any one political party. Although it is possible that your existing questions indirectly address this already through vote preferences.

if you think any of these ideas have merit let me know and I will add the questions to the list.

I like the idea of asking if a person owns or manages their own independent or small business or are part of a labour union. Could you make this into a question?

I think asking how they voted or would vote is enough to theorize their political leanings. Very few people are actually members of a political party, so it would be less relevant data.

We might have too many questions - how should we focus the objectives of this survey to make it to five questions?

Hey Guys, Im sorry I joined late, I had to switch groups due to conflicts within the group. I know the deadline has passed, 4pm or 7pm however, I am such a computer newb it took me a while to figure out where the dicussion page was posted...Stupid I know. However, I am ready to develop the second part of the assignment thats due on March 1st. Sorry about the snag again. I am aware I will recieve 0 out of 5, but I do have to join a group for the rest of the survey project. I would say I could help advance the questions more, but your 5 seem pretty solid.

Hey Genessa and Ryan,

This is a very small thread, but I think we can still make this work. There could be others like you Genessa who need to have a place to come and contribute, so I'll hope that we'll get some more people soon. A lot of the other threads did not follow the instructions and have 15+ people as part of their group (even though the maximum was 10). It will be up to Professor Cutler to determine how that will work, but I don't believe that he will penalize this group for having only 3 members at this time.

We have 6 questions at the moment, and we need to get them down to 5.

I did like Ryan's idea of incorporating whether or not someone owns a business, but that means we will need to take away two other questions. Also, I think very few respondents will actually own a small business, so it might end up giving us less useful data than the feeling thermometer questions.

I think the question below is a screening question, what do you all think?

Question 1: Did you vote to keep the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax)? 1. Yes 2. No 3. Did not vote 4. Could not vote

These two questions could be replaced by Ryan's question, but only a very small percentage of respondents will actually own a business. Here we need to try to ascertain what information we're trying to get from these questions. I personally moved more to feeling so that we could try to draw correlations between political leaning, income, HST and their views on businesses.

Question 4: On a scale from 0 to 100 please rank how favourably you view small businesses. Where zero is not favourably, 100 is very favourably, and 50 is neutral. (scale)

Question 5: On a scale from 0 to 100 please rank how favourably you favour large corporations. Where zero is not favourably, 100 is very favourably, and 50 is neutral. (Scale)

Questions 2 and Questions 6 ask how someone voted before the HST referendum, and how they would vote tomorrow (after the HST). We will get data from these two questions on whether someone switched their affiliation, but it will be hard to draw any definite conclusions from it. There could be many other reasons why people switched their affiliations - HST is not the only issue. So, this would be a weak data point, but I still want to keep it in. We'll be framing the discussion around the HST with the screening question, so we'll know that respondents are thinking about that issue. Truly, we need more questions to be able to have truly good data, but we only have 5 questions.

If you could both reply back to this thread that would be awesome. I'm really hoping to be able to get at least 750 respondents to this survey question.
